If you’ve never been to one of my yoga classes before, but you’re curious to find out if they’re for you—I’d encourage you to come along and try a couple of them for yourself!
In this article, I cover some of the principles of my yoga teachings, and who my classes are designed for to help you learn more about what I teach and the values that drive my yoga classes.
What Are My Yoga Classes About And Who Are They For?
1. All Body Types
My yoga classes are for all body types. I always aim to make my classes as inclusive for all body types as possible.
To do this, I aim to tailor the poses for individual practitioners. So that each practitioner’s experience of yoga is moulded to their needs, as opposed to trying to mould all of the unique practitioners in my class to one strict expression of yoga practice.
Yoga is a fluid and bespoke practice by nature (and in most traditions).
2. All Levels Of Experience
My classes are suitable for all levels of experience, whether you regard yourself as a beginner, intermediate or experienced practitioner.
We develop a holistic range of yoga techniques from yoga asana (yoga postures), pranayama (breath work and energy work), meditation (dhyana), and beyond.
Each practitioner has their strengths and challenges during the variety of yogic techniques that we explore, which challenges our idea of ‘hierarchy’ in yoga practice and experience.
3. Accessible And Trauma-Informed
I am continually engaging in Continual Professional Development (CPD) and finding ways that I can improve my yoga classes, workshops, courses, and retreats.
My classes are trauma-informed and aim to be as accessible as possible—although there is always room for deeper learning and improvement.
I welcome suggestions and feedback to help me refine my offerings.
Whilst I continually aim to ensure that my classes are suitable for all shapes, sizes, ages, and abilities—it’s important to note, that unless otherwise stated, my offerings are for those who identify as female, because of the yoni and womb work often integrated into my teachings.
4. Prioritise Breath Work And Meditation
During my yoga classes, we utilise our asanas (yoga poses) as a moving meditation, and therefore prioritise our breath work, concentration, and meditation during movement and yoga postures.
We do work on the physical aspects of strength, fitness, and flexibility (more commonly associated with exercise), but exercise, strength, fitness, and flexibility are not the ultimate priority during my classes, and we don’t push ourselves to the point of sacrificing meditation or the quality of the breath.
We refer to ancient scriptures for the basis of our practice such as Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras; “sthira sukham asanam” (Chapter 2, Verse 46)—most commonly translated as “the ideal yoga posture should be steady, stable, and comfortable”.
5. Those Who Are Nervous To Start A Yoga Class
I enjoy being an access point to yoga for those who are curious and interested in trying a yoga class, but are perhaps a bit nervous about going in the reservation of it being too challenging for their current capacity (or them not being ‘flexible’, ‘fit’ or ‘strong’ enough).
For more information on physical capacity and yoga, check out my article here; I’m not flexible, fit or strong—can I still do yoga?
6. Enjoy Variety And The Ability To Tailor Your Practice
If you enjoy variety, then you’ll enjoy my yoga classes. I’m certified and trained in a variety of yoga lineages and traditions, which allows me to teach a variety of different branches of yoga—which offers you diversity in your yoga practice.
I find it important to offer different yogic techniques and styles so that practitioners can tailor their yoga practice according to their daily changing needs. No two days on the mat are the same.
Your yoga practice isn’t stagnant, it is flexible and bespoke to your mental, emotional, energetic, physical and spiritual state in the moment.
Learning a variety of different yoga styles allows you to enjoy restorative yoga when you’re low energy, but more dynamic vinyasa flows when you have higher energy levels.
Some days you might feel like developing your mantra practice, whilst other days you might feel like strengthening your breathwork and energy work (pranayama).
I consciously incorporate a holistic range of yogic techniques so that you can intuitively draw upon a variety of tools for your own personal development during your own self-practice.
7. Interested In Holistic Wellness
My yoga classes are a haven for those who are keen to enhance their holistic wellness in terms of body, mind, and soul.
If you’re interested in things like nervous system regulation, emotional regulation, supporting your mental health, good nutrition to assist your wellness, and natural techniques to help you destress—it’s likely that you’ll find resonance with my yoga classes.
We don’t view our health, fitness, and wellness as one-dimensional—we honour the multiple facets that contribute to our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health.
8. Holistic Health And Fitness Routine
If you’re interested in a well-balanced health and fitness routine that incorporates both strength and mobility, you’ll benefit from adding yoga to your schedule.
If you enjoy cardio, weightlifting or the gym, then yoga is the perfect addition to help balance your endurance and strength routine with mobility and mindfulness.
Yoga is a holistic, wholesome, gentle and yet challenging way to complement other forms of physical movement, and can help to enhance your cardio, weightlifting, and gym exercises.
9. Self-Awareness + Self-Inquiry
My yoga classes focus on the fundamentals of traditional yoga practice which is to balance the subtle energy of the body, and building concentration and meditation to attain higher levels of consciousness.
Those who are keen to improve their self-awareness, mindfulness and clarity will find resonance with my yoga classes, the yogic techniques we practice and the personal development skills that we improve.
Yoga is a sacred form of self-inquiry, in which you can discover different facets of yourself as a tool for liberation and empowerment.
10. Self-Empowerment And Authentic Alignment
If you’re passionate about self-empowerment, autonomy, and living in alignment with your higher self—you’ll find my yoga classes supportive.
I aim to empower my students in their own self-governance, and seek to support your autonomy and individuality however I can.
You don’t need my permission to listen to your inner voice and intuition in my classes, and I encourage you to follow what feels right, as opposed to what you’re being invited to do.
This is particularly helpful for those in recovery, and those who are seeking to discover or rediscover their inner power and strength.
If you sense that there is a ‘different way’ for you to exist and be, one that is more authentic for your nature, and you’re keen to learn how to embody your higher self through better alignment—my offerings seek to support your recovery and authentic embodiment journey.
11. Mind-Body Connection
A central part of self-development and holistic wellness is self-awareness—especially a good mind-body connection and perceptive awareness.
If you’re keen to build a stronger mind-body connection and develop your sense of intuition, you’ll find that my yoga classes and the yogic techniques that we practice are helpful in improving your mind-body alignment and intuitive skills.
12. Self-Acceptance
If you’re on a journey of self-acceptance, my yoga classes are likely to be a good addition to your weekly routine.
My yoga classes foster deep levels of self-inquiry, self-awareness, and self-acceptance.
You are invited to meet the most intricate parts of yourself on the mat—and love each part of yourself deeply.
We change in personal identity, emotional identity, mental identity, physical identity, and spiritual identity at so many different crossroads and milestones during our lives. My classes are designed to help you to be present with (and accepting of) the season you are in today.
13. Curious And Open-Minded
Are you curious and open-minded? If you love discovering new things, and are interested in learning more about the sacred art and philosophy of yoga—you’ll probably gel very well with my style of teaching.
I am certified to teach a variety of different yogic lineages, which offers my students diversity in their personal practices.
In my yoga classes, you’ll be encouraged to be inquisitive about self-development, ancient belief systems, and how you can improve your yoga practice.
14. Traditional
I am passionate about upholding yogic traditions, respecting sacred lineages of spiritual philosophy, and maintaining the heritage of yoga in the changing modern landscape as best as I can.
As a yoga teacher in the modern world, this isn’t always an easy feat and some parts of the practice need to be tailored to meet the needs of the times and the changing global culture of norms.
However, within reason, I do my best to avoid the cultural appropriation of yoga, or the dilution of the practice—in an attempt to help preserve it as best as possible whilst it is shared around the world.
I enjoy teaching the roots of yoga, referring to scripture wherever possible, and try to convey the beauty of yoga without being dogmatic.
If you’re also passionate about history, culture, and spiritual traditions, you’ll likely appreciate my classes.
If you’re keen to learn more about the goal of doing yoga, and some achievable goals for beginners, check out my article here.
15. Spiritual
If you are interested in—or curious about—spirituality, it’s likely that you’ll enjoy exploring this in my classes!
My classes are founded on yogic spiritual philosophy, and I enjoy passing this knowledge on to my students.
Working with the spiritual aspects of yoga, such as the subtle energetic body creates such a wholesome and beneficial practice.
16. The Unity Of Science And Spirituality
Do you value the unity of science and spirituality? If you enjoy a healthy balance between Western knowledge and Eastern wisdom, you’ll appreciate the input of both science and spirituality in my teachings.
17. Change Makers, Advocates, And Activists
If you’re a passionate change-maker, advocate or activist, you’ll find a sanctuary to rest, revitalise and be inspired in my classes so that you can continue to do your valuable (and much appreciated) work from a full cup.
18. Supportive Like-Minded Community
If you’re keen to socialise in—and get support from—a like-minded community then you’ll likely find some great friends within my community.
I foster an accepting, warm, harmonious and welcoming community. Furthermore, I encourage the nurturing of supportive friendships within the community.
As a teacher, I aim to build genuine friendships and professional relationships with my students to help foster meaningful connections and a compassionate caring environment for my clients.
