Healing Effects Of Music

How Do You Heal With Sound And Music? | The Healing Effects Of Music

  • 24 December 2023

Music and sound vibration have been used for spiritual ceremonies and religious rituals to connect with Higher Consciousness for centuries. You’ll find sacred music and healing sound being used in all sorts of different contexts such as chanting of scripture verses, devotional songs of worship, to sound meditations.

Depending on how you use it, sound meditation and music can be extremely healing in a variety of different ways. And one of the best things is, that you don’t necessarily need to embark on music therapy with a professional music therapist if you don’t want, there are many ways that you can take sound therapy into your own hands.

Having your own sound healing practice to do as and when you need or want, is extremely empowering and healing.

In this article, we look at some of the healing effects of sound and music for the mind, body, and soul.

How Is Sound Used For Healing?

Here are some cool ways that sound healing therapy and music will support your holistic health journey and spiritual growth.

1. Connects You With Higher Consciousness

Creating a sound bath or using healing music can be a very intimate experience that connects you with Higher Consciousness or Spirit.

Many people report experiencing a heightened sense of awareness and more conscious connectivity with Universal Consciousness when using sound baths and music for their healing power. There are a variety of self-reports of going into different states of consciousness and experiencing transcendental shifts in consciousness.

Sound healing can be a very spiritual experience. When you remember your true nature beyond the ego—as part of Universal Consciousness—you are able to tap into infinite cosmic love, boundless power, and abundance which is naturally healing.

2. Sound Meditation

When you are using sound healing or music for healing, you can learn to enter a meditative state. Meditation within itself is a very powerful, healing, and transformational practice. Combining meditation with the healing vibration and energy of sound and music helps to amplify your experience along with shifting energetic blocks and stagnation.

Clinical research by the Behavioural Brain Research Journal noted that over 8 weeks of brief daily meditation practice (of roughly 15 minutes) can decrease the experience of negative moods and anxiety, whilst increasing attention span and memory.¹

Whereas another piece of clinical research by Ayu, a journal of research in Ayurveda, notes the vast mental, emotional, and physical benefits of meditation such as decreased stress, anxiety, depression, and a decrease in both mental and physical pain. Alongside increased efficiency, improved memory, and improved emotional regulation.³ Such research suggests that meditation and sound meditation can be a helpful complementary therapy for chronic pain, a variety of health conditions, and trauma.

3. Stimulates The Chakras And Energetic Body

Sound and music help to stimulate your chakras and your energetic body. If you’re experiencing any stagnant energy then music and sound can really help to get your energy flowing freely again.

Sound creates different frequencies and vibrations that are very powerful. Each of your chakras has a specific frequency, vibration, and specific sound associated with it—also known as a bija mantra.

You can tap into your different chakras by using specific mantras, sounds, frequencies, or vibrations. And this helps to support and invigorate your energetic channels, which are much like meridians.

If you’re experiencing certain challenges or stagnation, then working with your chakra centres by using sound can be a great way to overcome hurdles. Bija mantras are a great sound healing instrument for guided meditation.

There is a unique connection between the voice and the vagina through the throat and sacral chakras. If you’re interested in learning more about the physical and mystical synchronicities between the yoni and the vagina then you can check out my blog article here.

4. Improves Overall Wellbeing And Mental Health

Sound healing and music are great tools to support your overall well-being and mental health. A clinical research paper by BBI – Health Journal notes that research has found that music can positively enhance mental and physical wellness. The paper notes that music can improve mental disorders, heart rate, the immune system, and motor skills.²

Another clinical research paper by Frontiers In Psychology Journal notes that singing in groups helps to support good cognitive health and the general well-being of those suffering from mental health issues and adults.⁴ Whilst playing a musical instrument was noted to have associations with improvements in cognitive health and general well-being in school students, adults, and those who suffer from minor brain injuries.

5. Increases Self-Esteem And Confidence

Using your voice can help to build your self-esteem, self-expression, and confidence. The clinical research paper by Frontiers In Psychology Journal notes that music helps to build self-esteem and empowers minorities who are marginalized.⁴

As you learn to get more comfortable with your self-expression through music your confidence and self-esteem can increase.

6. Can Encourage Healthy, Positive Thoughts

Clinical research by the Scientific Reports Nature Research Journal noted that different types of music have different effects on the thoughts of research participants. They found that heroic music in particular evoked empowering thoughts that felt exciting, constructive, motivating, and positive.⁵

Depending on what you need within your healing journey, you can choose different types of music and sound frequency to evoke different emotions, thoughts, and feelings to aid and support your journey. For example, if you’re feeling overwhelmed and anxious some types of music can help to lower stress levels and blood pressure.

7. Encourages Self-Expression

Music and sound are great for healing because they’re a good healthy creative outlet for emotion. This helps you to address and move through sensations, feelings, and emotions as opposed to avoiding or suppressing them.

Bottling up emotion is not at all good for your overall well-being, music and sound can allow you to explore your thoughts and emotions as opposed to avoiding them.

Using music and sound in a safe space to address emotions and truly feel what you’re feeling can be a deeply healing experience—especially if you’re looking to use sound healing to move through trauma.

If you want to know why activating your voice (and your vagina) is so important. Then check out my article on the benefits of nurturing the vagina and voice connection here.

8. Soothes And Balances The Nervous System

The vagus nerve travels through the larynx which is home to your vocal cords, and it is one of the most important nerves of the parasympathetic nervous system. The vagus nerve is responsible for making you feel calm and relaxed.

The parasympathetic nervous system activates the body’s ‘rest and digest’ or ‘feed, read, and breed’ response during which the body heals, rests and does restorative maintenance and repairs.

Deep rhythmic breathing and low-pitched humming, singing, and vocal exercises help to stimulate the vagus nerve via the respiratory diaphragm and the larynx.

As the respiratory diaphragm moves steadily and slowly with your breath, combined with the vibration from your vocal cords in the larynx, it stimulates the vagus nerve through a unique combined healing frequency. This helps to balance and soothe your nervous system whilst also encouraging your body to heal and repair.
